The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has disclosed that 1,492 people lost their lives through road accidents between January and June 2026.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the NRSA, Madam Simbiat Wiredu, disclosed this while clarifying an earlier report that 1,000 accident-related deaths were recorded within four months.

She explained that although the figure may be true—adding that the Authority’s breakdown for the period aligns closely with police data—she wanted to set the record straight regarding the source of the statistics.

Madam Wiredu described the Authority’s half-year breakdown as “very worrying,” underscoring the urgent need for stronger road safety interventions.

Addressing the causes of these crashes, she noted that while several factors contribute to road accidents, driver behavior remains the leading cause.

“Most of the drivers don’t behave well in terms of speeding and other matters, which usually causes road accidents,” she said, pointing to excessive speeding and traffic violations as key drivers of the country’s crash statistics.

Earlier data cited by the NRSA indicated that between January and April 2026, 1,009 people lost their lives in nationwide road crashes, leaving thousands of others injured.

Detailing the full six-month statistics, Madam Wiredu stated: “From data that we have certified, from January to June 2026, 1,492 people have died from road accidents. This means that 250 people die every month from road accidents. The figure is alarming, troubling, and calls for immediate action. One human life lost through an accident is not the best, and so this is not about the figures. It is about dealing with the challenge to manage the situation and protect human lives.”

She further stated that current legislation provides for the digitalisation of enforcement systems, allowing technology to track motorists who breach traffic regulations.

Madam Wiredu revealed that efforts are also underway to remove rickety and unroadworthy vehicles from the roads.

She stressed that combating road crashes requires collective responsibility, adding that technology will ensure drivers who violate traffic rules no longer go unpunished.
