Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam following a significant rise in water levels upstream.

The water level at the dam has risen to 45.2 feet, closely approaching the critical safety threshold of 46 feet. The surge follows heavy, continuous rains upstream and within the wider catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.

To protect the structural integrity of the dam, management has declared that controlled spillage will begin on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

In an official statement released on Monday, September 7, 2026, the company urged residents in nearby areas to take immediate precautionary action.

“As the level is approaching the 46-foot threshold, GWL will resume spillage from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam,” the statement noted.

“All Residents living downstream of the Weija Dam are to evacuate the area before any eventuality. Residents must remain alert, follow official evacuation directives, and avoid activities that may expose them to danger,” the management added.

The release further directed key emergency and local authority bodies to prepare for swift response efforts.

“The NADMO, the District Assembly, Traditional authorities, Assembly Members, Resident Associations, and other relevant stakeholders are to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation,” the statement read.

Communities expected to be impacted by the exercise include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey, and other surrounding settlements.

GWL assured the public that monitoring teams are continuously tracking weather conditions and water levels to provide timely updates.

“GWL is closely watching the situation and will continue to provide updates. The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” the statement concluded.
