The patient, who was immunocompromised and consequently at a higher risk of developing severe complications, succumbed to the infection.

Speaking on the tragic incident, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered his condolences to the bereaved family.

“My heartfelt condolences to their loved ones,” Dr Tedros stated, adding that global health officials are collaborating closely with French agencies to evaluate the situation.

Shamonda virus is an animal pathogen known to affect livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Transmission among animals occurs primarily through the bites of tiny flying insects known as Culicoides midges.

Investigations revealed that the deceased patient resided in an area with active viral circulation among local animal populations and a established presence of the vector midges.

“World Health Organization is in contact with French authorities who are collecting information to better understand the source of infection in the first human patient, possible routes of transmission and any potential risk to public health,” Dr Tedros affirmed.

Researchers and international health bodies are conducting further epidemiological studies to determine whether any broader public health threat exists and to clarify the exact mechanisms leading to human exposure.
