Professor Mathew Yamoah Kyei, a prominent consultant urologist and surgeon at both The Trust Hospital and the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has strongly advised men against undergoing penis enlargement procedures due to the high risk of severe complications.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Professor Kyei stressed that the size of a man’s manhood is rarely a genuine medical issue, adding that any size is capable of satisfying a woman. He explained that complaints regarding size stem mostly from mindset rather than physical insufficiency.
He outlined that even in situations where a procedure is considered, a patient must undergo rigorous medical screening and examination beforehand. He further clarified that these procedures can only add a maximum of two centimetres to a man’s existing size.
According to the consultant surgeon, the methods used—whether surgical operations or filler injections—carry notable hazards. Although recent medical advancements have introduced approved injection techniques designed to reduce certain risks, the effects remain temporary, lasting between six months and a year and a half before requiring repeat treatments.
Discussing the inherent risks involved, Professor Kyei said: “Penis sizes can be affected by medical conditions or infections; however, for the majority of men who complain about having a small penis, it is simply a mindset issue. We can use surgery to increase the size, but that comes with serious complications. In recent times, we have a newer approach using injections, but this also carries risks. It is important to know that these injections last for only six months to a maximum of one and a half years, after which you must return for another treatment. If the procedure is not performed correctly, it can cause severe problems for the individual by blocking the veins that return blood to the heart, leading to collapse and, in severe cases, death.”
His comments follow the tragic death of 43-year-old British-Nigerian businessman and social media influencer, Igho Ubiribo, who died after undergoing a penis enlargement procedure during a holiday in Thailand with his wife. An inquest at the Inner West London Coroners’ Court heard that Mr Ubiribo died in March after receiving 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at a clinic in Bangkok. He experienced chest pains and lost consciousness twice while receiving a massage with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, shortly after the procedure. He was rushed to Sukhumvit Hospital, where medical staff identified a pulmonary embolism—a blood clot blocking the blood vessels in his lungs. He collapsed again before a scheduled CT scan could be performed, and despite doctors attempting resuscitation for over 100 minutes, he passed away in the early hours of March 6.
Reacting to the incident, Professor Kyei suggested that the dosage administered during the procedure may have been excessive.
“From what I have read, I suspect he may have died due to an excessive dose of the injected substances, which likely blocked his blood vessels and caused his death. What the public must understand is that these procedures come with significant complications, which is why we advise men to avoid them whenever possible,” he noted.
He further cautioned that botched procedures can permanently damage penile function, leaving the patient impotent.
Addressing whether the procedure is medically justified, Professor Kyei emphasized that elective enlargements remain rare and unnecessary for sexual health.
“This procedure is not common. In most instances, those who undergo such operations are patients who have suffered accidents or severe infections requiring reconstructive surgery. Doing it purely for enlargement is rare. Women do not require an unusually large penis to achieve sexual satisfaction. Any size can satisfy a partner, and the size of your penis is simply not significant enough to warrant taking these risks,” he explained.
He concluded by noting that in instances where a patient insists on proceeding despite direct medical advice against it, comprehensive consent forms are formally executed to ensure the individual fully understands the potential dangers involved.
