Management of the Holy Family Hospital in Berekum has revealed that theft cases in the facility have increased, prompting officials to implement strict measures to apprehend the perpetrators.
The hospital’s Human Resource Manager, Mr Peter Quaicoo, disclosed this in an interview following the arrest of a suspected thief who posed as a staff member and allegedly stole an iPhone 16 belonging to a nurse.
Narrating the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that recurring thefts in the facility led management to issue severe warnings to workers to remain vigilant. He noted that this heightened alertness directly contributed to the suspect’s arrest.
“Of late, the cases of thefts have increased. So we have asked staff to remain on high alert and report any suspicious behaviour. We have installed CCTV cameras; however, we have admonished staff to stay on alert and apprehend anyone who is not a staff member but comes to the facility to steal,” he said.
Detailing how the incident unfolded, Mr Quaicoo stated that the suspect entered the female ward to change. When questioned, he claimed another nurse had granted him access. The nurse in question was cautioned that she would be held financially responsible for anything missing from the room. Consequently, she followed up and confronted the suspect, who was dressed in medical scrubs.
The young man—who falsely claimed to be an employee at the dental ward—was subsequently seen handing the stolen phone to a security guard, instructing him that he would collect it later.
It was at this point that staff realised he was an impostor. Attempts by the suspect to abscond were foiled, and he was apprehended before being handed over to the police.
According to Mr Quaicoo, this was not the suspect’s first attempt at stealing from the hospital, noting that the individual had previously escaped by scaling a facility wall.
He further disclosed that the suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. However, after being assaulted by members of the public during his capture, he is currently receiving medical treatment while in police custody and will be arraigned as soon as he recovers.
Meanwhile, Mr Quaicoo also revealed that two individuals arrested last year for stealing at the facility are currently serving 18-month prison sentences each.
