Lands Minister advocates electric mining trucks to lower fuel costs and cut emissions

September 10, 2026
Armah-Kofi Buah

Ghana’s Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has declared that the future of the nation’s mining sector hinges on adopting electric vehicle (EV) technology to cut heavy operational fuel costs and curb environmental damage.

He stated this during an official tour of Longking, a major EV manufacturing facility located in Longyan, China, aimed at exploring how electric-powered mining trucks could reshape industrial operations back home.

The Chinese manufacturing plant is currently building 25 heavy-duty electric mining dump trucks, each featuring a 230-tonne capacity, for the Zijin Golden Ridge Mine situated at Akyem in the Eastern Region.

Accompanying the Minister were technical officers from the Ministry and its affiliated agencies. The visit formed part of pre-participation activities leading up to the 2026 China Mining Conference held in Tianjin. During the walkthrough of the 40-year-old Longking facility, the Ghanaian delegation inspected trucks in active production as well as finished units scheduled for shipment to Ghana.

Speaking on site, Mr Buah noted that modernization within Ghana’s natural resources sector must leverage high-capacity electric mobility, advocating a stronger strategic partnership with Longking.

“We are overwhelmed to see the life-changing products you are working on here, which are critical to environmental protection and new energy for the mining sector,” Mr Buah remarked. “I see your role in renewable energy, pollution control, and safeguarding water bodies. The revolutionary changes you have introduced replace fossil fuels with electric vehicles to reduce mining costs for companies in Ghana, ultimately freeing up funds for national development.”

The Minister commended Zijin Golden Ridge Mine for taking the lead in procuring electric haulage trucks and urged other mining firms operating across the country to adopt similar green technology.
