The 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has been named as the major sub-contractor for the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.
President John Dramani Mahama disclosed this during an announcement outlining key infrastructure developments for the country’s transport network.
As part of the initial phase, the military engineering unit has been directed to begin site clearance and prepare the Right-of-Way for the New Accra Orbital bypass.
Financing for the flagship project is already underway, with $2 billion currently secured in a dedicated account.
President Mahama assured that the fund will reach $4 billion by the end of the year, fully covering the total cost of construction.
The procurement process moved into a critical stage following the publication of the Expression of Interest for prequalification of contractors on Friday, 11th September 2026.
A streamlined contractor selection phase will now run for a maximum of four weeks, with the main contract scheduled for award before the end of the year.
He made the remarks on Monday, September 14, 2026, when the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) handed over the cleared right of way for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway to the government.
The handover followed GAF’s completion of clearing 175.6 kilometres along the project corridor.
Commending the Armed Forces for executing what he described as a critical assignment for the project, President Mahama noted that the route stretches from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, requiring clearance through forests and across rivers and streams.
He added that the work marks an important preparatory step toward the construction of the 198.7-kilometre expressway.
“In 20 weeks, I’m pleased to announce to the whole country of Ghana that our armed forces have accomplished this mission. One week ahead of schedule, they did it in 19 weeks,” President Mahama said.
“From Ablekuma in Greater Accra to Sewua in the Ashanti Region, within 19 weeks, 175.6 kilometres of road passing through virgin forests, crossing rivers and streams, our Ghana Armed Forces can today announce to all of us, as they say in military jargon, mission accomplished,” he said.
