Four persons are in police custody following a joint intelligence-led operation that rescued a 30-year-old man, Bismarck Amo, who was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and extorted over an alleged financial fraud in Kumasi.
The suspects, identified as Mavis Badu Acheampong, a 42-year-old teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School; Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, also a teacher at the same school; Charles Doku, a 53-year-old security guard; and Oteng Baffour, a 31-year-old electrician, were rounded up during a coordinated regional police operation code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim allegedly defrauded Mavis Badu Acheampong of an unspecified amount of money. In response, Mavis allegedly conspired with her husband, a senior military officer currently out of the country, to lure Mr Amo from his base in Assin Fosu to Kumasi on 3rd September 2026. Upon arrival, the victim was forcibly abducted by Mavis and her accomplices.
The syndicate held Mr Amo hostage at Mavis’s private residence from 6th to 11th September 2026, subjecting him to severe torture.
In a disturbing display of cruelty, the suspects stripped him naked, tied his manhood with a strong nylon rope, and beat him continuously until he sustained deep lacerations across his head and body.
The perpetrators filmed the horrific abuse and transmitted the recordings to the victim’s family, demanding a ransom of GH¢ 45,000.00 under explicit threats of execution. Before police intervention, the traumatized family had already transferred GH¢ 19,500.00 via mobile money.
The family formally reported the ordeal to the Regional CID in Assin Fosu on 8th September 2026.
Following tactical tracking, police teams intercepted the kidnappers on 11th September 2026 as they attempted to relocate the victim to a new hideout.
Mr Amo was safely rescued while partially unconscious and drenched in blood, and he remains hospitalized under police escort.
The Inspector-General of Police coordinated the cross-border operation involving the Central North Regional Command, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, and specialized CID units. Police have launched a manhunt for the senior military officer and other fleeing accomplices, assuring the public that self-help justice will face the full extent of the law.
