Situated within the hospital’s Child Health Department, the center aims to provide a welcoming space where children receiving medical care can read, learn, and play in a safe, standard environment.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Professor Catherine Segbefia, Head of the Child Health Department, expressed deep appreciation to the funding partners who helped bring the project to reality. She emphasized that the facility offers far more than bricks and mortar, giving young patients room to explore, imagine, and dream through books and outdoor play.

The initiative was brought to life through a broad collaborative effort. Akua Sarpong, Executive Director of Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana, noted the contribution of the Ghana Library Authority, which donated roughly 1,300 books to stock the shelves.

She explained that the space will serve as a vital therapeutic retreat for children undergoing lengthy treatment, helping them stay connected to learning while bringing a sense of fun to their daily routine.

Highlighting the complementary role of the space, Eben Anuma, Technical Representative of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), pointed out that whilst clinical staff treat physical illness, access to literature and recreational areas helps nourish young minds and foster emotional stability.

The facility honors Professor Lorna Awo Renner, a leading advocate for pediatric oncology care, who expressed her gratitude to the organizers for their commitment to improving the hospital experience for children.

The event concluded with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a tour of the library and playground for partners, hospital staff, and guests.
