The Ministry of Health has secured a new pathway for qualified Ghanaian nurses to work in the United States following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the City of Columbus, Ohio.
Signed jointly by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, the agreement follows months of technical discussions with US counterparts. It establishes a framework for the ethical recruitment and deployment of healthcare professionals across the Atlantic.
The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, emphasised that the agreement goes beyond simple job placement, highlighting the need to safeguard the rights and welfare of local workers.
“Any deployment arrangement must protect the rights, welfare, and professional interests of Ghanaian health workers,” Hon. Akandoh stated.
He explained that the initiative aligns with Ghana’s Migration Policy to secure credible international employment for healthcare staff while adhering to global standards.
The partnership leverages the long-standing Sister-City relationship between Accra and Columbus alongside the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme.
Hon. Akandoh further assured that the government will continue seeking partnerships that offer decent overseas jobs without compromising worker protection or national health priorities.
