A Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, has taken a swipe at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, describing him as a noise maker who thrives on making unfounded claims and allegations to make his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), appear relevant.
She was responding to the Minority Leader’s call on Ghanaians to prepare for a heavy wave of misinformation and fake news from the governing NDC as the nation approaches the 2028 general elections.
According to the Effutu lawmaker, the administration will aggressively deploy propaganda and manufactured distractions in a desperate bid to hold onto power and draw public attention away from its policy failures.
In a statement aimed at exposing the government’s political strategy, Mr Afenyo-Markin noted that disinformation has long been a core tactic of the NDC. He urged citizens to scrutinise allegations originating from the party, pointing out that many claims made while in opposition have since been disproven by facts.
“Going into the 2028 elections, one strategy the NDC Government is likely to use aggressively, in its desperation to hold on to power, is misinformation and disinformation,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He added: “Expect fake news and manufactured distractions aimed at taking attention away from the important national issues on which the Government has failed to deliver. This is not new; it is a political tool they have mastered.”
However, responding to these claims, the NDC Deputy General Secretary dismissed them as lies coming from a politician who might have used similar strategies in the past, feels uncomfortable, and assumes the NDC will do the same.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she told host Kwabena Agyapong that unlike the NPP and its assigns, who thrive on wild claims for political advantage, the NDC remains focused on delivering on its mandate to the Ghanaian people.
She assured the public that the NDC has no plans to use vile means to stay in power, as alleged by the opposition leader, and urged Ghanaians to ignore his statements.
“The unsubstantiated claims made by Afenyo-Markin are not only false, but they expose an agenda they may have possibly used while in office. It could mean that it was something the NPP used or was doing while they were in office, and so he is afraid of his own shadow, thinking that we as a party will do the same thing. But I want to assure Ghanaians that the NDC is not wired like that. We are very focused as a party and, most importantly, as a government,” she stated.
She added: “They are frustrated and so finding ways to stay relevant, and that’s why Afenyo-Markin is making these reckless comments. But I want to reiterate that President John Dramani Mahama remains focused. He is committed to delivering on his mandate to the people. He is focused and has no time to waste on needless things.”
“I don’t think the NPP has fully recovered from the massive defeat they suffered in the 2024 general elections, and so they are making unfounded allegations against the NDC just so they will stay relevant. They know how terribly they performed and the message it communicated about how disappointed Ghanaians were in their performance in the eight years they ruled. The NPP has lost relevance, and Ghanaians no longer take them seriously. Ghanaians listen to them, and the only thing they see are noise makers. They governed for eight years and messed up, and after leaving office, they keep making noise,” she added.
