EPA shuts down Empire Cement Ghana Limited over air pollution

September 16, 2026

The Environmental Protection Authority has issued an immediate shutdown notice to Empire Cement Ghana Limited following comprehensive investigations into public complaints regarding severe air pollution from the facility.

The regulatory intervention was triggered by persistent concerns from nearby communities, where residents reported severe health and environmental disruptions caused by dust particles and hazardous industrial discharges.

A detailed technical assessment conducted by the enforcement unit of the Authority uncovered sustained particulate and gaseous emissions that directly violate established safety thresholds.

Investigators also established that the factory had failed to install modern, state-of-the-art pollution control technologies necessary to capture harmful industrial by-products before they escape into surrounding residential zones.

In addition to the physical pollution risks, the factory was cited for significant administrative non-compliance.

Management repeatedly failed to submit mandatory quarterly environmental monitoring reports, leaving regulatory officers unable to evaluate operational safety standards over an extended period.

Under the current closure order, Empire Cement Ghana Limited must completely halt all factory processes with immediate effect.

The shutdown will remain in force until the company upgrades its abatement systems, mitigates damage to the surrounding environment, and satisfies all statutory reporting obligations.

Operations will only resume after the facility receives full written clearance from the regulatory body.

The regulatory agency reaffirmed its mandate to safeguard public health, emphasizing that adherence to national environmental standards remains non-negotiable for all industrial commercial operators.
