A 24-year-old commercial motorcycle operator, locally known as an Okada rider, has met his untimely death following a fatal collision with a pregnant cow at Okumeni, a sub-community near Kade in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The deceased has been identified as Silas Mintah.
Reports gathered by Nyankonton Mu Nsem indicate that Silas was returning home at approximately 2:00 am after visiting a neighbouring village when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Upon reaching a stretch of the road at Okumeni, the rider reportedly rammed directly into the pregnant cow, which was standing in the middle of the unlit roadway. The violent force of the impact threw him off his motorcycle, resulting in severe body injuries.
Passers-by and local residents who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash rushed him to the Kade Government Hospital for emergency medical care. However, attending medical officers pronounced him dead on arrival.
The tragic passing of the young man has thrown the entire Okumeni community and his family into a deep state of shock and mourning.
Following the crash, distressed residents have strongly voiced their frustration regarding the unchecked practice of cattle owners allowing their animals to roam freely on major roads, particularly at night. They described the situation as a growing death trap for road users, especially motor riders who navigate the route in low-visibility conditions.
The residents are urgently appealing to local authorities and the Kwaebibirem Municipal Assembly to strictly enforce existing by-laws on stray animals and ensure cattle owners confine their livestock to prevent further avoidable loss of life.
Police in the municipality are expected to commence investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Kade Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
