Seven African Nations turn to Ghana’s GoldBod model to transform small-scale mining

Seven African nations have sent official delegations to Ghana over the past year to study the operational framework of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) as a potential blueprint for reforming their respective gold sectors.

Representatives from Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Sudan, and Namibia visited the regulatory body to examine how Ghana successfully integrates artisanal and small-scale miners into a formal, traceable system while keeping local operators actively engaged.

During his visit, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, commended the GoldBod framework as a sustainable model for gold-sector reform across the continent.

Similarly, a delegation from Tanzania’s Minerals Commission, led by Dr Theresia Numbi, noted that Ghana was selected for study following a comparative analysis of several nations, describing the country as a pioneer and centre of excellence in mineral governance.

Delegates from Namibia also highlighted the model’s robust structure as a primary benchmark for policy development.

The influx of continental study tours underscores growing regional interest in Ghana’s approach to formalising informal mining activities and securing domestic precious metal supply chains.
