Commuters across the country must prepare to pay more for public transport starting next week, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s news flagship programme, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the union, Mr Samuel Amoah, revealed that a fare adjustment is now inevitable following recent economic pressures on drivers.
According to Mr Amoah, the Ministry of Transport previously established a special committee to evaluate operational costs after transport unions submitted a formal proposal requesting a 30 per cent increase in fares.
He explained that while the committee’s findings were originally slated for immediate release, the recent surge in fuel prices earlier this week forced a slight delay to allow the panel to recalibrate its data.
”The committee was expected to submit its report any moment from now, but the work was delayed because another fuel price increase was announced earlier this week. Once we receive the final report, all stakeholders will meet to agree on the exact percentage, but an increase is definitely coming next week,” Mr Amoah stated.
Addressing concerns within the transport sector, the Deputy PRO appealed to commercial drivers and parallel transport bodies to exercise restraint while the leadership concludes negotiations with government representatives.
He assured operators that the upcoming adjustment would adequately cushion them against escalating fuel prices and high spare parts costs, ensuring their businesses remain viable.
