The Ministry of Education has indicated its willingness to push back the admission deadline for first-year Senior High School (SHS) pupils if ongoing hiccups with the computerised placement process are not fully ironed out by the weekend.
Addressing distressed parents and students gathered at the Accra placement resolution hub, the Minister for Education gave reassurances that every eligible candidate would secure a placement. He noted that the Ministry would advise the Ghana Education Service (GES) to review the official resumption date should the administrative backlog endure.
“If we fail to clear all these outstanding cases [by the week’s end], I will direct the GES to take the necessary action… Rest assured, while the 18th remains the reporting date, every single individual here will receive assistance,” he declared.
The development follows days of heavy crowding at various resolution venues nationwide. Parents and guardians have expressed frustration over a spectrum of hurdles, ranging from total non-placement and school transfer requests to system glitches on the self-placement portal. Specialised task teams have been tasked with working extended hours to address all complaints.
Although Form One pupils are scheduled to report on Friday, September 18, 2026, the timeframe remains subject to revision if unresolved cases persist.
In a separate development, the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured members of the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) that their outstanding 2025/2026 Book and Research Allowance will be disbursed before the end of September 2026.
The intervention aims to avert an impending strike by the union over delayed payments. Briefing journalists on Wednesday, September 16, Mr Iddrisu confirmed that information for approximately 8,000 TUTAG members had already been passed to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department for processing.
“We instructed GTEC to forward the relevant records to the Controller and Accountant-General. I am pleased to confirm that affected members whose data has been verified will see the allowance reflected in their September pay packets,” he stated.
He added: “We remain fully committed to meeting these obligations. Following my discussion with the Controller and Accountant-General at the close of business yesterday [Tuesday, September 15], data entry for up to 8,000 beneficiaries has been completed.”
