The government of Ghana has forcefully rejected assertions connecting state appointees or party figures to an ongoing investigation into cocaine smuggling.
The Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, urged the public to disregard allegations that lack factual support.
He stressed that critics have failed to produce proof linking public officials to the criminal network.
“You folks, as you speak, nobody has put forward any evidence of the involvement of any member of government or any member of the party,” he spoke on the Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu cautioned against unverified commentary, emphasizing that groundless claims only serve to distract from law enforcement efforts.
“It is imperative that we avoid this kind of speculation and rumour-mongering when there’s no basis for it,” he added.
The police investigation stems from the arrest of ten individuals—among them four officers from the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority—who face prosecution over their suspected involvement in smuggling narcotics out of the country. Clarifying the identities of those detained, the presidential spokesperson noted that no state officials are among the suspects in custody.
“None of the people in custody at the moment is a member of government,” he said.
Addressing wider concerns about accountability, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu maintained that political affiliation will not insulate anyone from prosecution should new facts come to light. He affirmed that the administration remains committed to applying the law equally to every citizen regardless of status or party affiliation.
“In any event, even if a high-ranking member of government or a member of the NDC was involved, it would mean that they have committed a crime against the state of Ghana, that they have violated Ghanaian law, and therefore they will be taken through the same processes that anybody else who violates Ghanaian law will be taken through,” he said in an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
