GES warns school heads against ejecting students over metal trunks and chop Boxes

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned heads of Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) against turning away newly admitted students or denying them accommodation for carrying metal trunks, wooden chop boxes, or other personal storage containers.

The directive, dated 18th September 2026 and signed by the Deputy Director-General (MS), Prof. Smile Dzisi, follows reports that several schools were rejecting newly admitted students because of the type of storage containers they brought to campus.

According to the Service, forcing parents and guardians to purchase specific types or brands of storage containers recommended by individual schools places an unnecessary financial burden on families.

“All students admitted to boarding accommodation should be treated fairly and accommodated without discrimination based on their economic circumstances or the ability of their parents or guardians to purchase particular brands or types of personal effects,” the statement read.

Regional Directors of Education have consequently been instructed to ensure that all school heads comply with the directive. The GES emphasized that students carrying reasonably sized, safe storage containers that pose no threat to the health and safety of others must be allowed admission and boarding facilities.

Prof. Dzisi further warned that the Service would investigate any reported cases of non-compliance and apply sanctions to defaulting school heads.

“LAny reported case of a duly admitted student being denied accommodation or turned away solely because of the type of trunk, chop box or personal storage container brought to school should be investigated and same reported to Management,” the directive stated.

“Any Head of SHS/SHSTS who flouts this directive shall be dealt with in accordance with the applicable standards, regulations and laws of the Service,” Prof. Dzisi added.
