The President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has demanded urgent action to enhance the safety and general welfare of media practitioners across the country, warning that the survival of the nation’s democratic governance relies on a free and secure press.
Speaking at the ongoing Federation of African Journalists Steering Committee meeting in Accra, Mr Dwumfour expressed deep concern over the persistent physical and psychological threats reporters face while performing their duties. He noted that the ongoing physical attacks on journalists remain a serious threat to press freedom and democratic values.
He emphasised that improving working conditions and the overall welfare of reporters is crucial to sustaining the profession. To keep pace with the rapidly evolving media landscape, he encouraged media personnel to embrace modern technological advancements and adopt innovative approaches to reporting.
The GJA leader highlighted the association’s plan to build strong strategic alliances with the Federation of African Journalists and domestic civil society groups to defend journalists’ rights and foster a safer working environment.
The regional summit in Accra brings together key continental media leaders to address press freedom, professional ethics, reporter welfare, and institutional collaboration across Africa. Mr Dwumfour expressed confidence that the engagements would yield concrete mechanisms to safeguard journalists locally and internationally.
