Government is actively putting measures in place to expand job opportunities across the country, aiming to leverage recent economic stability for the benefit of the populace.

The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, who disclosed this, emphasized that the state remains committed to turning general economic growth into real employment and better living conditions for ordinary citizens.

Speaking at the 2026 Data Asset Summit Africa (DASA), Dr. Pelpuo underscored the critical role that data and modern economic channels must play in driving effective employment planning and workforce expansion.

He noted that standard training models are no longer sufficient to address the country’s employment needs.

“Approach must go beyond training people for existing jobs, we must prepare our young people for the jobs of the future and create opportunities in future,” he stated.

The Minister urged stakeholder institutions to shift their focus toward building an environment where young people can innovate rather than solely seek traditional employment.

“So that they can become investors, they can become entrepreneurs and they can become creators of employment and let me pay tribute to the Kenyan who developed the mobile money system and this is just to tell us in Africa that we have the brains, we have the men, we have the capacity, we simply have to be triggered on to do something new for every other person to benefit. We can’t just continue to be consumers of technology,” he added.

Addressing the gap between education and market demands, Dr. Pelpuo called for stronger partnerships between educational bodies and commercial sectors to equip the upcoming workforce with relevant digital skills.

“Our universities, our technical and vocational institutions and industry must therefore work together to ensure that training is closely aligned with the emerging needs of the digital economy,” he stressed.
