Dr. Kwasi Oppong-Fosu, a former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development as well as former Head of the Local Government Service, has officially announced his bid to contest the National Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking at a well-attended event in Accra, he centered his campaign message on party renewal, institutional strengthening, and reconnecting the leadership with its grassroots base.
He emphasized that the NDC must rebuild internal trust and restore authority to its fundamental units at the branch and constituency levels.
Following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections under President John Dramani Mahama, Dr. Oppong-Fosu highlighted that the NDC’s next phase demands a transition from factional, personality-driven politics to a structured, system-oriented organization.
Pledging to transform the NDC into Africa’s most compelling progressive party, he outlined a strategy anchored in ethical leadership, institutional capacity, research, technology, and robust political education.
He noted that his extensive background in local governance alongside his work with international bodies, including the United Nations, uniquely equips him to project the party as a continental benchmark for social democracy.
Endorsing the declaration, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo urged NDC delegates to prioritize proven competence over tribal sentiment or financial inducements when selecting future leaders.
The former Kpone-Katamanso legislator warned that monetization and divisive considerations compromise party unity, stressing that strong, capable leadership is essential to consolidating power and delivering on President Mahama’s Reset Ghana Agenda.
