Site clearing and land preparation have officially commenced at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to make way for a modern, 400-bed Mother and Child Block.
The new state-of-the-art medical facility will replace the premier referral centre’s dilapidated maternity unit, delivering a significant boost to maternal and child healthcare delivery nationwide.
In an official update, Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the onset of preliminary site works, framing the project as a major investment in world-class health infrastructure by President John Dramani Mahama.
Designed to deliver comprehensive specialist care, the upcoming complex will feature dedicated obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labor and delivery suites, operating theatres, an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit, and specialized critical care environments, including an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The facility will also introduce advanced medical capabilities, hosting an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre alongside specialized clinics for fertility, reproductive health, breastfeeding, antenatal, and postnatal support.
Supporting operational infrastructure will encompass a full Diagnostic Imaging Department, laboratories, blood bank facilities, a central pharmacy, a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), and dedicated physiotherapy and rehabilitation spaces.
Beyond patient care, the unit will double as a clinical training hub, housing teaching, research, and conference facilities to support continuous medical education.
