The Minority Caucus in Parliament has petitioned the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, demanding an emergency sitting to address critical national security concerns following major drug busts linked to Ghana.
First Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, submitted the official memorandum on behalf of the caucus. The petition invokes Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution alongside Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, satisfying the required 15 per cent threshold of Members of Parliament to compel a recall.
At the heart of the demand is the recent interception of approximately 3.9 tonnes of cocaine in Dunkirk, France. French authorities reportedly found the haul concealed inside a shipping container that originated from Ghana.
The caucus wants the House to scrutinise port security measures, customs scanning equipment, intelligence operations, narcotics control enforcement, and broader frontier surveillance protocols.
The Minority is seeking a full parliamentary probe involving key security and transport institutions. Expected to appear before lawmakers are the Ministers for Interior, Transport, and National Security, alongside chiefs of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana Immigration Service, and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
Lawmakers also highlighted a troubling pattern of illicit drug shipments linked to Ghana since 2025, pointing to previous busts at Pedu Junction, Tema Harbour, Australia, and France.
The petition urges Parliament to establish facts, assess the state’s security apparatus, and demand accountability without compromising active criminal investigations.
The Speaker is expected to summon lawmakers back to the House within the constitutional timeframe.
