Two suspects are in police custody following a failed attempt to bribe a senior police commander after security forces intercepted 175 compressed slabs of illicit drugs near Achimota.
The arrest follows a high-stakes night operation conducted on Friday, September 11, 2026, by the Bravo SWAT Unit of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.
Briefing media personnel on the development, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that operational teams acting on actionable intelligence tracked and intercepted a Kia Rhino truck at Abfu, near Achimota. The occupants onboard the vehicle scrambled into hiding upon spotting approaching officers, leaving the truck behind.
“When officers searched the abandoned vehicle, they uncovered 175 compressed slabs of dried plant materials suspected to be narcotics, carefully hidden in three large sacks alongside three woven ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags,” Supt. Obeng disclosed.
Both the seized truck and the suspected contraband were promptly transferred to the Regional Headquarters in Accra to facilitate deeper inquiry.
The plot thickened when two men, later identified as Mark Bangal and Zakaria Arafat, walked into the headquarters claiming ownership of the vehicle and its intercepted cargo.
In a bid to wriggle their way out of the dragnet, the pair reportedly offered a cash sum of GH¢30,000 to the Commander of the Bravo SWAT Unit, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr. Steven Remi Salewu, to secure the illegal release of the truck and the drugs.
“The two individuals were immediately taken into custody after offering the bribe, and the full cash amount was impounded as evidence,” the police spokesperson noted.
Investigators are currently hunting for a third key suspect, known only as Salam, who is believed to have driven the drug-laden truck all the way from Kpandai down to the capital city.
The two suspects have since been arraigned before court as inquiries continue.
Issuing a stern warning to the public, Supt. Obeng emphasized that trying to buy off law enforcement officers or public officials remains a heavy offense that carries stiff legal penalties. She stressed that the police administration will aggressively prosecute anyone who attempts to compromise officers or disrupt the course of justice.
