Three teacher unions have issued a final ultimatum to the government, threatening uncoordinated action across the country if long-standing demands regarding promotion placements, salary arrears, and allowances are not addressed immediately.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to honor its commitments. The leadership revealed that the 2025 promotion placement, along with the corresponding payment of outstanding arrears, remains unfulfilled despite prior consensus.
“This is in clear violation of the agreement reached with government to automatically place all affected teachers by close of September, 2026,” the statement signed by Thomas T. Musah, Jacob Anaba, and King Ali Awudu declared.
The unions warned that the persistent delays have heightened frustration and anger among educators nationwide. Beyond the immediate promotion and salary grievances, union leaders highlighted other unresolved disputes, including the renewal of the collective agreement and the non-payment of the Deprived Area Allowance.
Setting a strict deadline, the unions stated that the government has until midday on Thursday, 24 September 2026, to resolve all outstanding issues. They cautioned that failure to meet this demand would leave executive leadership unable to restrain union members from taking further steps.
“We hereby serve notice that if by mid-day, Thursday, 24th September, 2026, all the issues are not addressed, the Teacher Unions will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore and whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise,” the statement stressed.
While calling on teachers across the country to remain calm and await official directives, the leadership instructed members to prepare to participate fully in any upcoming actions announced by the unions.
