GMA dismisses claims of unmonitored waters

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims made by political figure Dennis Miracles Aboagye suggesting that the country’s maritime surveillance system is non-functional and that vessels operating within national waters are left unmonitored.

The maritime regulator described the allegations—made during broadcast appearances on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite—as false and out of touch with actual operations.

In a formal statement addressing the matter, the GMA categorically refuted the assertions, clarifying that its maritime surveillance infrastructure remains fully operational across national waters.

“The Ghana Maritime Authority categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana,” the statement noted. “The Authority’s surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction is operational.”

The regulator further stated that it maintains a continuous 24-hour monitoring regime across the country’s maritime domain to safeguard territorial waters and protect critical national assets.

“The Authority continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain,” the Authority stated. “The system is also used for monitoring and protecting offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.”

Reassuring the public on its operational protocols, the GMA explained that standard operating procedures are strictly followed to track vessels, verify identities, enforce compliance, and ensure environmental and navigation security.

Dismissing the remarks as unfounded, the Authority urged the public to disregard the claims and rely solely on official communications regarding Ghana’s maritime security.
