The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced an 8 per cent increase in public transport fares nationwide, effective Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The decision follows an agreement reached between transport unions and the government after weeks of consultations regarding the 2026 fare review.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, urged drivers to refrain from charging the new fares before the official implementation date and called on operators to adhere strictly to the guidelines issued by the union.
He explained that the union accepted the 8 per cent adjustment after the government assured transport operators that measures were being considered to cushion them against rising fuel costs in the coming days.
According to Mr Amoah, although the adjustment was lower than transport operators had anticipated, the union agreed to the compromise in light of the government’s commitment to supporting the sector and addressing fuel prices.
“Officially, we have not started taking the new fares, so commuters will therefore begin paying the revised fares from Saturday, September 26, 2026. The new rates will apply to trotros, shared taxis, and other commercial public transport services. Those who have started taking new fares are doing so illegally,” he said.
He stressed the need for drivers to exercise patience and wait until Saturday before charging the new fares.
