Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Nii Armah Ashietey, has declared his intention to build a resilient and formidable base for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party prepares to elect a successor to incumbent National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
Addressing party faithful in Accra shortly after announcing his candidacy, the party stalwart emphasised that consolidating the gains achieved under Asiedu Nketia’s leadership requires a direct focus on empowering local structures.
According to him, the NDC’s core strength lies within its grassroots. He warned that any leader who ignores the branch and ward levels risks undermining the political foundation of the party ahead of future elections.
Hon. Ashietey also voiced full support for the 2026 Supreme Court decision that abolished the traditional delegates system used to elect national officers. He noted that opening the franchise to all card-bearing members in good standing strengthens internal democracy and ensures genuine representation.
He subsequently urged party voters to prioritise experience, humility, unity, and a proven track record of service when electing the next national chairman to steer the party forward.
“If you give me the opportunity to serve as National Chairman, I will work towards a more inclusive, united, participatory NDC, where the grassroots, cadres, former executives, youth, women, and all committed members will have a minimum, meaningful place in the affairs of our party.”
“We must strengthen our structures, deepen internal democracy, rebuild the bonds of comradeship, and ensure that the NDC remains a party where every member matters and every contribution counts.”
“I hereby declare my intent to contest the National Chairmanship of the great NDC party.”
