The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has clarified that the printing of the new notes will not mean the existing ones will not be used, assuring the public that current legal tender remains valid.

Addressing journalists at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama stated that the newly introduced Heritage Series will run side by side with the current currency, allowing citizens to carry on making everyday transactions using their existing notes following the official rollout.

The central bank has advised members of the public against rushing to cash points or financial hubs to swap or withdraw current notes simply due to the arrival of the updated series.

”The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs, designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and Ghana’s aspirations,” — Dr Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

He added “There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or to withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the new Heritage Series”.

In his address, the Governor called on the business community, traders, and commercial banking institutions to exercise care when dealing with paper money, warning against bad habits such as crumpling, scribbling on bills, stapling, or repurposing banknotes for decorative arrangements.

“Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes. It will reduce replacement costs for the central bank and it will support efficient currency management,” he said.

Bank authorities emphasized that careful handling of paper currency remains essential to maintain note quality, lower re-printing expenses, and streamline national cash management systems.

“Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes. It will reduce replacement costs for the central bank and it will support efficient currency management,” he said.

The forthcoming Heritage Series is slated for official release under the overarching theme: “The Cedi: Our Future, Secure, Designed to Last.”
