Sixty-four suspects are in the grip of the police after a targeted swoop on a popular lounge near Achimota Mile 7 in Accra led to the retrieval of several illegal firearms and ammunition.
The swoop, executed by the Special Operations unit under the Inspector-General of Police alongside the National SWAT team, was triggered by sustained complaints from neighborhood residents over rampant criminal activities and the brazen display of guns in the enclave.
Investigators impounded an unregistered blue Acura vehicle parked on the premises after finding an empty pistol holster inside. The vehicle was towed to the Police Headquarters as none of the patrons at the scene came forward to claim ownership.
The operation took a dramatic turn when one suspect, Theophilus Ashon, attempted to evade scrutiny by posing as a detective attached to the CID Operations. Prompt checks exposed his claim as false, and a body search uncovered a loaded Smith & Wesson pistol with six live rounds of ammunition.
A follow-up operation at Atico led to the arrest of a second key suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills. A thorough search of his home yielded an impressive arsenal, including three pump-action shotguns, four pistols, over fifty rounds of live ammunition, and scores of shotgun cartridges.
All sixty-four suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue, and officers confirm they will be processed for court in the coming days.
