Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering solidarity with Cuba, calling for the immediate and unconditional removal of long-standing economic sanctions imposed on the Caribbean nation.
The Minister made the declaration following a high-level diplomatic engagement with Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Mr Ablakwa revealed that the bilateral meeting served as a key platform to deepen historic ties between both countries, reflecting the foreign policy stance recently articulated by President John Dramani Mahama during his UN address.
“My meeting with the distinguished Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Comrade Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla was an excellent opportunity to renew the solidarity of Ghana for Cuba,” Mr Ablakwa shared. “As President Mahama reiterated during his UN address, Ghana calls for the unconditional lifting of sanctions against Cuba.”
The discussion centered on reviewing bilateral cooperation, specifically focusing on the health sector. The long-standing partnership facilitates the deployment of Cuban medical professionals to support healthcare delivery in Ghana, as well as the academic training of Ghanaian medical students in Cuba.
Touchpoints were also made regarding Ghana’s recent humanitarian support to Havana. Mr Ablakwa noted that relief materials dispatched by the Ghanaian government had safely arrived and were delivering critical assistance to recipient communities.
“The Government of Ghana is delighted to know that the relief items we donated arrived in great condition; that it made the necessary impact; and that it is well appreciated by the Cuban people,” he stated.
Concluding his engagement, the Foreign Affairs Minister commended the resilience of the Cuban public amid prevailing economic pressures and formally extended congratulations to the nation on the centenary anniversary of the late revolutionary leader, Comrade Fidel Castro.
