Global Affairs Analyst and former Aide to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr Agbai Eke Agbai PhD, has asserted that Nigeria, alongside many African nations, is traversing significant hurdles, yet holds immense promise provided sound policies are implemented.
Appearing on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline morning show hosted by Kwabena Agyapong, Dr Agbai highlighted Nigeria’s position as the most populous country in Africa and the leading Black nation globally, home to approximately 230 million people.
“Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa, give and take about 230 million and that is the most populous black nation and that is huge potential in terms of human resources if properly utilized. Nigeria can live up to the dream of being one of Africa’s greatest developed nations,” he said.
Addressing the issues hampering Nigeria’s growth, Dr Agbai identified leadership deficit as the primary obstacle, noting that it remains a pervasive problem across the continent. He stressed that President John Dramani Mahama’s approach to governance distinguishes Ghana within the West African sub-region.
“The challenge of Nigeria is almost one of the challenges of African nations which is leadership,” he noted, adding that this is why what President John Dramani Mahama is doing has set Ghana apart in the sub-region.
“What the President of Ghana is doing now is setting him apart from the continental sub-region. He has shown that Africa is capable of producing a fantastic leadership,” Dr Agbai stated.
He further emphasised that commercial growth and external investment rely heavily on stability, an environment he believes President Mahama has successfully fostered.
“As a businessman, money travels to where it feels confident. Money travels where there is stability. The economy is doing very well and that is what it appears that the President of Ghana has successfully done which explains one of the reasons Ghana is doing very well,” he added.
