Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has officially opened the 2026 Micronutrient Forum 7th Global Conference in Accra, bringing together international stakeholders to bolster collective action against global nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Monday, September 28, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed Ghana’s pride in hosting the crucial summit, highlighting it as a prime opportunity for the nation to share its achievements while learning from global best practices.
She emphasized that malnutrition continues to pose a formidable global challenge, stressing that effectively tackling the issue demands a well-coordinated strategy spanning health, agriculture, education, local government, research, and the private sector.
Underscoring Ghana’s integrated approach, the Vice President pointed to the Feed Ghana Programme, through which the government is actively fortifying domestic food production to build a resilient and self-sufficient food system. She noted that the Free Primary Healthcare policy provides a vital platform to systematically weave nutrition into preventive healthcare, allowing for early detection and intervention before minor nutritional risks escalate into severe health issues.
Acknowledging the current economic and environmental landscape, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang observed that with many nations navigating tight fiscal constraints alongside climate shocks, sustainable financing and robust partnerships have become indispensable. She maintained that all national and global interventions must stay firmly focused on improving the day-to-day lives of ordinary people.
Commending the conference organizers, international partners, and delegates for assembling the forum, the Vice President expressed optimism that the deliberations over the course of the event would yield practical and enduring solutions for global food security and health.
