Breast cancer awareness must lead to action – Deputy Health Minister

The Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has urged stakeholders in the fight against breast cancer to move beyond awareness campaigns and strengthen the systems that enable patients to receive timely diagnosis and treatment.

She said creating awareness about breast cancer would have limited impact if patients who presented early could not access the diagnostic and treatment services they needed.

According to her, breast cancer remained the leading cancer among women in Ghana, with an estimated 4,650 new cases and about 2,060 deaths recorded annually, making timely diagnosis and treatment essential to reducing the impact of the disease.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah said Ghana’s breast cancer response was guided by the World Health Organization’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative, which focuses on health promotion, early detection, timely diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment.

She encouraged the public to seek medical attention promptly when they noticed breast lumps, changes in the skin or nipple, nipple discharge, or swelling in the armpit.

She also cautioned against misconceptions and practices that could delay treatment, stressing that a biopsy does not spread cancer and that painless breast lumps should not be ignored.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah subsequently declared the 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month duly launched, urging stakeholders to use the month to promote practical action that would help more people detect breast cancer early and access appropriate care without delay.

The 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month, being observed under the theme “Early Action, Better Outcomes,” provides an opportunity to intensify public education on breast cancer, promote early detection, and encourage timely access to care.
