Global Affairs Analyst and Aide to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr Eke Agbai, has expressed disappointment in the Nigerian government over its handling of the country’s rising insecurity.
He stated that no one could convince him that the Nigerian military lacks the capacity to deal with the security situation in the country.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he pointed out that the widespread insecurity has severely affected national stability, security, the economy, and human life.
“It is very unfortunate that we’re still facing boko haram, kidnapping, banditary expecially in the North East.”
He argued that there is a distinct lack of political will to tackle these violent incidents ruthlessly.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that most of the security challenges facing the nation are politically motivated, describing the development as deeply unfortunate.
“How can a country of 250 million depending on who is counting with the degree of might Nigeria brings and a non actor can challenge the stability of a country.
“Something is just not right. Nigeria can handle its issue if it wants to. The question is why? You cannot tell me the Nigerian Military cannot bring about security in the country. Something is fundamentally wrong and its very unfortunate because it is impacting development, it is impacting movement, it is impacting all aspects of life.”
Dr Agbai added that it is both inexplicable and unconscionable to accept that political motives drive the situation in some instances.
He emphasised that investors will naturally avoid any nation where safety cannot be guaranteed, stressing that the ongoing crisis is undermining the rule of law.
“Nobody comes to a country where you feel unsafe. No business will come there. It impacts the rule of law. The movement of people from one place to the other is affected and that is why I am.saying ghat something needs to be done to arrest the insecurity situation if Nigeria wants to make progress.”
