The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has stated that no casualties can be confirmed at this time following a devastating fire that swept through Kofikrom at Avenor in the Greater Accra Region.
Firefighters struggled to contain the massive blaze that erupted close to the Industrial Area in Accra on Thursday morning. The inferno broke out at roughly 7:30 am in Kofikrom, an area located behind the railway line near the Avenor junction. The affected precinct is densely populated with wooden kiosks and serves as a bustling hub for local cattle and goat traders.
Providing an update on the situation, the Head of Public Relations for the GNFS, DO1 Emmanuel Bonney, noted that firefighters managed to confine the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
“We have confined the fire to prevent it from spreading further to the main factory or warehouse in the area. We have done our best and prevented it from damaging more property. So I can state that we have contained the fire.”
He explained that the fire started from a wooden structure behind the ECG office and spread to the Duraplast company, where the blaze intensified due to chemicals stored on-site. He added that due to the hydrocarbon nature of these chemicals, firefighters had to deploy chemical foam compounds to manage the situation.
Crews from the Ghana National Fire Service were dispatched swiftly to the scene and worked frantically to extinguish the remaining flames and safeguard adjacent properties.
“The cause of the outbreak and the extent of damage or casualties remain unconfirmed as emergency personnel continue their operations on site,” DO1 Bonney stated.
He praised the fire officers and senior leadership at the scene, commending their immense efforts in bringing the situation under control.
When asked when the public could expect the fire to be completely extinguished, he noted that an exact timeframe could not be determined; however, he assured that the blaze would no longer spread to surrounding properties.
DO1 Bonney revealed that eight fire tenders were deployed to combat the blaze. When asked whether additional equipment could have helped speed up the operation, he answered in the affirmative, noting that the service could perform even more effectively with advanced machinery.
