A total of 40 additional health personnel have been posted to the Weija-Gbawe Children’s Specialist Hospital to strengthen operations at the nation’s flagship paediatric referral centre.
The directive, issued by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, will see 10 medical doctors alongside 30 nurses and midwives join the workforce with immediate effect.
Mr. Akandoh disclosed this following a working tour of the 120-bed state-of-the-art facility, which stands as Ghana’s premier stand-alone paediatric referral hub.
Assessing the progress on-site, the Health Minister expressed satisfaction with the smooth rollout of services, confirming that the facility has already begun attending to emergency cases and out-patients following the complete installation of crucial clinical equipment.
Speaking to journalists after inspecting the premises, the Minister emphasised that the incoming medical team would help scale up clinical care as the facility expands its operations.
“This is Weija-Gbawe pediatric referral or specialist hospital. It’s about 120 bed capacity and it’s now in operation… I have directed that with immediate effect they should bring additional ten medical doctors and 30 nurses and midwives to beef up the health workforce,” the Minister said.
Beyond staffing enhancements, Mr. Akandoh underscored the need for a strict maintenance culture to safeguard the investment, while urging health workers to uphold high standards of patient care.
“We have also impressed upon them to make sure they keep the facility well, maintain it and try to treat the patients with respect and dignity… and we have our eyes here because it’s a very important and sensitive facility for the country,” he added.
