Displaced residents across several communities in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region have received a vital lifeline following a donation of essential relief items by President John Dramani Mahama.
The presentation comes on the heels of torrential downpours on Monday, 28 September, which caused extensive flooding across the municipality. The rising waters swamped residential properties, destroyed household belongings, and severely impacted local livelihoods.
To alleviate the suffering of the affected households, the Presidency supplied a consignment of emergency provisions. The items, which included bags of rice, gari, mattresses, cleaning supplies, and roofing sheets, were entrusted to civic authorities and disaster management officials for distribution.
While speaking to local chiefs and displaced community members, President Mahama expressed his heartfelt sympathies and promised that the state would continue to offer support during the recovery period.
“These items are from the Presidency. Accept our sympathies,” President Mahama stated during the presentation. “We will leave it in the hands of the MP, the MCE, and the Regional Minister to distribute these items fairly so that those who are affected are the ones who will receive them.”
The Head of State also extended warm wishes and words of comfort from First Lady Lordina Mahama to the victims.
Supplementing the government’s efforts, President Mahama revealed a major private sector intervention. Mr Ibrahim Mahama, the chief executive of Dzata Cement, has committed 5,000 bags of cement to support families whose homes suffered structural damage or total collapse.
“The owner of Dzata Cement, who happens to be my younger brother, has also promised 5,000 bags of cement to help the people whose houses have been destroyed,” the President added.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, took custody of the relief stock on behalf of the constituency. He commended the President for reacting swiftly to the disaster and standing in solidarity with the people.
“Your Excellency, you have once again demonstrated that you are with us. The Volta Region will forever remain grateful to you,” Mr Gunu remarked.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has charged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) alongside local municipal leaders to carry out comprehensive damage assessments, remain on high alert, and strictly implement municipal planning regulations to mitigate future flood occurrences in the enclave.
