One person has been confirmed dead and two others narrowly escaped with their lives after a mining pit collapsed at Akyem Dwenase in the Eastern Region on Thursday afternoon.
The tragic incident, which occurred around 5:00 PM, trapped three workers deep under the rubble. Local residents immediately rushed to the site to initiate a rescue operation, managing to pull two of the miners out alive.
However, the third victim, identified as Kwabena, was recovered unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragic loss has plunged the entire Akyem Dwenase community into profound shock and grief, with residents gathering in somber mood as word of the fatality spread across the township.
While authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the sudden collapse, community members and local stakeholders have intensified calls on regulatory bodies and local authorities to enforce strict safety measures and step up oversight to avert future disasters in the area.
