Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have endorsed 14 constitutional amendments at their National Delegates Conference at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday, 3 October, officially establishing the flagbearer as the supreme leader of the party.
The critical policy shift reverses a January 2026 decision which had placed the National Chairman at the helm, handing overall leadership back to flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP prepares its campaign for the 2028 general election.
Overriding a proposal by Acting National Chairman Joseph Danquah Smith—who cautioned that time constraints and ongoing executive elections might hinder thorough scrutiny—the conference pressed ahead to pass all 14 motions submitted by the Constitution Amendment Committee.
The reforms fundamentally alter internal election dynamics, ending the system where vice-chairmanship candidates run in a single pool and take rank based on total votes. Aspirants must now contest specific first, second, or third Vice Chairperson seats, complemented by three newly created non-elected vice-chairmanship appointments. Further structural adjustments include elevating the IT Officer to executive rank and creating Deputy Communications Officer roles.
Justifying the reforms, Frank Davies, Chairman of the NPP Constitution Amendment Committee, explained that the adjustments aimed to rectify past oversight and streamline operations ahead of the next general election.
“These limited constitutional amendments were necessitated by some acts of omission and commission, which heralded the last amendment we had in 2025, so this is to cure the grey areas that we overlooked,” he said.
Emphasising the necessity of the vote, Mr Davies added, “It is imperative that these amendments are carried through because of the ramifications they have for our party’s organisational structure.”
Supervised by the Electoral Commission, the constitutional review marked the opening segment of the gathering, preceding national executive polls. A total of 7,163 delegates across 16 regions gathered at 31 polling stations to elect nine national officers to steer the party’s future.
