The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has defended its decision to request the urgent intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to remove unauthorised occupants, encroachers, and illegal operations from the beachfront adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
In an official statement issued on 2 October 2026, the Board of Trustees of SSNIT explained that both hospitality facilities form a crucial part of the Trust’s investment portfolio and represent vital national assets.
According to SSNIT, it maintains a strict fiduciary duty to protect these state assets, maintain their financial value, and generate long-term returns for Ghanaian workers and pensioners enrolled under the Basic National Social Security Scheme.
“These assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana,” the statement emphasised.
Outlining the reasons behind the security intervention, SSNIT cited growing threats to safety, public health, and hotel operations. The Trust noted that the persistent illegal occupation exposed guests, workers, and visitors to security risks while creating potential fire, sanitation, and environmental hazards.
Furthermore, SSNIT highlighted that unauthorized access directly in front of the facilities degraded privacy and service standards expected of internationally recognized hotels. The Trust also pointed to severe coastal ecosystem damage caused by unapproved construction on the beach sand, as well as operational disruptions that negatively affected revenue, patronage, and overall financial performance.
SSNIT warned that allowing further expansion of these illegal structures would make any future recovery of the affected land increasingly complex and expensive.
Addressing concerns over public use, the Trust assured citizens that the cleared stretch of coast will undergo environmental restoration and remain open to the general public.
“The beaches will be cleaned and restored to a safe and desirable state and will remain open to the public,” the statement added.
