Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has pledged that the government will settle all outstanding promotion arrears owed to striking teachers by October 30.
Speaking at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Accra during a two-day NTC-organised symposium and exhibition, the Minister acknowledged the state’s obligation as an employer to fulfill its financial commitments to educators.
Addressing attendees at the event, Mr Iddrisu emphasised that failure to meet the scheduled deadline would directly compromise his standing.
“The government has accepted that I am responsible for honouring my obligations as an employer to all teachers. And we have accepted that we will pay their arrears. We will honour them,” he stated. “If by October 30, your promotion arrears are not paid, then I will have no honour.”
The commitment comes in the wake of a nationwide strike declared on September 25 by three major pre-tertiary unions: the Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), GNAT, and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).
Prolonged delays in disbursing promotion-related arrears and other service conditions have sparked widespread dissatisfaction across the pre-tertiary education sector. The Ministry’s timeline aims to address these persistent grievances and bring an end to the industrial action.
