The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs is pushing forward with a fresh strategy to revamp the nation’s major cities, offering corporate naming rights for public roads and major landmarks in exchange for direct private investment in city beautification.

Speaking at the latest edition of the Government Accountability Series, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, disclosed that his outfit is currently developing an initiative aimed at pulling in private capital to fix up public spaces.

Under the framework being drafted, private businesses that step up to fund the greening, maintenance, and visual upgrade of designated streets and landmarks will be granted exclusive advertising rights along those stretches, as well as the privilege of having those locations named after their brands.

“We are working on an initiative to get private businesses to finance the beautification of streets and landmarks in major cities in return for having those streets and landmarks named after the businesses, as well as advertising space and rights,” Hon. Ayariga told attendees at the briefing.

The Minister explained that the move is designed to ease the financial burden on local authorities while ensuring that urban centres across Ghana receive continuous maintenance and modern aesthetic upgrades through corporate social responsibility and strategic brand partnerships.

In a related development, Hon. Ayariga also announced that the Ministry is nearing the completion of a major national waste management programme expected to significantly tackle urban sanitation while driving local employment.

He revealed that the Ministry is putting the final touches on the system’s design, projecting that the full roll-out of the scheme will generate approximately 20,000 jobs across the country.

According to the Minister, the incoming waste management model will combine modern collection, recycling, and processing techniques to streamline how sanitation is handled in metropolitan areas, providing both environmental relief and economic opportunities for youth in the sector.

Both initiatives form part of broader efforts by the government to improve local infrastructure, boost municipal revenue models, and promote public-private partnerships across municipal and district assemblies.
