NPP conducted praiseworthy election but failed on female inclusion, says analyst

October 6, 2026
Samuel Boateng

Political analyst Samuel Boateng has expressed deep disappointment over the marginalization of women in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) newly elected national executive.

Reacting to the outcome of the party’s national delegates conference—where all executive positions were won by men, with the sole exception of the Women’s Organizer position secured by Mavis Hawa Koomson—he described the situation as an unfortunate failure to grant women equal opportunities to serve at the highest level.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr. Boateng commended the party for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections, but criticized the resulting gender imbalance.

He pointed out that women have repeatedly proven their capability in top national governance roles, including Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, and Vice President, making their continued exclusion from key party leadership all the more troubling.

“I am highly disappointed that women in our political space are not given opportunities to serve at the top. This imbalance will inevitably reflect in national governance positions as well. We must reach a point where both major political parties deliberately reserve key executive roles for women. It is deeply unfortunate that only a single woman was elected to the national executive, and that status quo ought to change,” he stated.

To address the persistent disparity, Mr. Boateng urged political parties to consider implementing affirmative action quota systems and other deliberate measures to ensure equitable representation.

While noting that the outcome ultimately reflected the choice of the delegates, he emphasized that the newly elected executive officers must now demonstrate decisive leadership and justify the trust placed in them.
