Calm has been restored at Nchiraa, a community in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region, following violent disturbances that erupted during the annual Yam festival celebrations over the weekend, leaving two persons dead and fourteen others suffering various degrees of injury.
The violence broke out around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, 3rd October 2026, at the Four Junction area shortly after official festival proceedings had drawn to a close.
According to preliminary investigations conducted by the security agencies, trouble started whilst the traditional ruler, Nana Tabiri Yaw II, accompanied by his sub-chiefs, was being escorted back to his palace. The peaceful procession was suddenly shattered by a gunshot, triggering chaos and unrest across the area.
Out of the fourteen injured victims, thirteen sustained gunshot wounds—including an on-duty police officer deployed to maintain order. All injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at health facilities.
The police confirmed that the bodies of the two deceased individuals have since been transferred to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Providing official confirmation on the incident, the Bono Regional Police Command, through a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, assured the public that firm measures have been put in place to deal with perpetrators.
“The Wenchi Divisional Police has restored calm following disturbances which erupted at the four junction,” Chief Inspector Akeelah stated.
He added that “Patrols have been intensified in Nchiraa, and the situation remains calm. The Bono Regional Police Command assures the public that every effort is being made to arrest any individual involved in the disturbances.”
Security personnel have stepped up visible policing and night patrols in and around the town to forestall any potential reprisal attacks while active investigations continue to identify and apprehend all culprits behind the violence.
