Ghana Joins International Big Cat Alliance to Boost Wildlife Conservation

Ghana has formally joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) as part of national efforts to strengthen global wildlife conservation and protect endangered species.

The official agreement and instrument of acceptance were presented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, during his official visit to Ghana.

The International Big Cat Alliance was launched in 2023 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside several international founding partners.

The coalition brings together countries and conservation stakeholders to secure the future of seven major big cat species: lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, pumas, and cheetahs.

Speaking on the bilateral exchange, Mr Ablakwa emphasised that joining the alliance aligns directly with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for the tourism and environmental sectors.

He noted that the government is focused on expanding Ghana’s national wildlife reserves, curbing poaching activities, preventing species extinction, and rehabilitating zoos across the country.

Through this global partnership, Ghana aims to position itself as a premium destination for ecotourism and conservation management across West Africa.
