Over 2,000 lives Lost in nine months as MTTD sound warning over preventable road crashes

Ghana’s roads have claimed more than 2,000 lives in the first nine months of this year, according to grim new data released by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

Between January and September 2026, a total of 2,151 fatalities were registered in traffic-related accidents nationwide. The casualty figures paint a bleak picture of road safety across the country, with an additional 12,230 individuals suffering injuries ranging from minor cuts to life-altering trauma over the same timeframe.

Disclosing the figures in an exclusive media chat, the Director of Education, Research, and Training at the MTTD, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, highlighted the massive scale of the crisis.

ACP Obeng explained that the sobering statistics capture every reported crash handled across all 25 police administrative regions. In each instance, police investigators were deployed to crash sites to support emergency rescue teams, coordinate casualty care, and begin investigating the root causes of the collisions.

However, police authorities maintain that these numbers should never have reached such tragic heights. ACP Obeng emphasised that the vast majority of these fatal wrecks stem from human error and remain entirely preventable.

He issued an urgent appeal to drivers, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, and all road users to observe traffic regulations, avoid reckless overtaking, and prioritise safety, warning that strict adherence to the rules of the road remains the only way to stem the tragic loss of life on the country’s highways.
