Government has initiated decisive measures to resolve pressing labour grievances raised by various unions within the education sector, including the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, confirmed the development while highlighting government’s commitment to maintaining industrial peace across tertiary and basic educational institutions.
Speaking at a public event, the Minister expressed deep concern over persistent industrial actions, emphasizing that Ghana is currently benefiting from a stable academic calendar running from September to June for the first time in nearly a decade. He noted that preserving this structured timeline remains crucial for predictable academic planning, appealing to members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to refrain from embarking on further strike actions that could disrupt student progress.
Addressing specific financial claims, Mr Iddrisu stated that the Chief Director of his ministry has confirmed the disbursement of the Book and Research Allowance to eligible personnel. In addition, the Minister of Finance has signed off on executive warrants to facilitate one-off payments owed to affected staff within the sector.
On the issue of salary upgrades, the Minister revealed that high-level engagements have taken place with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, backed by the Ministry of Finance. Firm directives have been issued to process a supplementary payroll on or before 16 October. This supplementary run is expected to capture upgraded salary bands for roughly 51,000 teachers whose documentation has passed validation.
The remaining 80,000 validated teaching staff are scheduled to receive their adjusted remuneration alongside their standard October salaries, with regular September salary payments remaining fully secure.
Assuring educators of a permanent resolution, the Education Minister maintained that government is nearing a complete clearance of all outstanding operational and financial concerns raised by the unions.
