Questions have begun to surface following the swearing-in of one of the newly appointed Deputy Commissioners at the Electoral Commission, Emelia Afi Agbenyo, after details emerged regarding her active involvement in the 2024 general elections.

Madam Agbenyo, who brings extensive administrative experience to her new role having previously served as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, was officially sworn into office on Monday alongside Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah.

However, her elevation to the election management body has drawn intense public scrutiny, particularly on social media.

Screenshots of past Facebook posts have widely circulated, showing her actively campaigning for President John Dramani Mahama and his Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, during the 2024 presidential race, where she reportedly served as a campaign spokesperson.

The two appointments fill crucial vacancies within the top hierarchy of the election management body. Dr Asamoah fills the vacancy left by the resignation of Dr Bossman Asare, who was responsible for Corporate Affairs until his departure at the end of July. Meanwhile, Madam Agbenyo takes over operations following the statutory retirement of Samuel Tettey.

Despite her established professional background in administration, commentators and political observers on social media have expressed mixed reactions over her past party political affiliations, sparking widespread discussion about neutrality within the leadership of the Electoral Commission.
