Emelia Agbenyo too politically exposed for EC role – Political analyst

Political analyst Samuel Boateng has raised strong concerns over the appointment of Emelia Afi Agbenyo to the Electoral Commission, describing her as too politically exposed for such a sensitive role.

According to him, the previous New Patriotic Party administration made a similar appointment, which the current administration—then in opposition—vehemently criticised. He questioned why the same practice is being repeated today.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Mr Boateng stressed that the Electoral Commission is far too vital an institution in governance for a well-known political figure to be appointed to it.

He noted that while Ms Agbenyo may possess the requisite competence for the job, the hyper-partisan nature of Ghanaian politics will make it exceedingly difficult for her to be perceived as independent or to discharge her duties without suspicion.

Mr Boateng further chided political figures who engage in active partisan politics before taking up independent state roles, warning that such conduct undermines public confidence in key governance institutions.

“The politics we conduct in Ghana is one of convenience rather than principle. I cringed when I heard her name because she is a well-known politically exposed person who has actively participated in partisan political activities. It would not have posed a challenge if she were appointed as a Minister of State or a Chief Executive Officer. However, for sensitive institutions like the Electoral Commission, appointments must be reserved for individuals without any partisan political affiliations,” he said.

He added, “Appointing someone with such clear political exposure inevitably raises doubts and undermines her credibility. Critics will always suspect that her decisions are tailored to serve the interests of her political party.”

He further argued that although she will not be the sole Commissioner operating at the EC, personal biases could still influence her judgment in favour of her political leanings.

“While critics will naturally raise concerns about almost any nominee, appointing those who are openly politically exposed poses a distinct danger. Her appointment ultimately generates far more political controversy than confidence in the vital work she has been assigned to do at the Commission,” he stated.
